 Fort DeRussy, a Civil War Fort, is located about 4 miles north of Marksville and is easily accessible by automobile and has a steady stream of visitors.
It is part of a larger Civil War complex. The Fort itself is a State
Historic Site.

Fort DeRussy was an earthen fort built by slaves to defend the Red River during the Civil War. The fort is located four miles north of Marksville and named after Col. Lewis G. Derussy, who is buried on the site. The fort was captured by Union troops during the Red River Campaign of General A.J. Smith. Union forces attempted to destroy the fort, but a large portion still exists. A visitor can see the earthen structure and visit the cemetery. A monument to the slaves who helped in the construction of the fort is part o the overall historical ambience of the fort and its history. Fort Derussy is a state historical site.
